Renovation update- July ‘09
Here’s the latest from Patty:
Hello Friends of the Indian Park Schoolhouse!
Work at the schoolhouse continues despite a few glitches. We knew we would uncover small glitches as the work went along. None of them are serious and issues have been addressed by our contractor and the architects. Some of the “discoveries” required changing plans and extra expenses. Fortunately, the “association” set money aside for such emergencies.
Work on the roof was postponed when the safety of the building became compromised. However, materials were purchased well within budget.
Dennis DeVries has finally been able to move the soil behind the building. He did a great job and re-laid the soil like a surgeon. Our outhouse site is undisturbed! George Melvin lent his backhoe to the efforts.
Elver Robbins went to select stones for the foundation. We needed less than we had thought and so saved funds.
I am told that attendance at the Tuesday meetings are well tended by interested folks, and I am grateful for it.
Genia Oja has been negotiationg meeting and volunteers. And Val Frislie has been keeping all of us straight on the money matters. She manages us like a pro.

June News: Melodrama Canceled for ‘09
Here’s the latest from Patty:
You have probably noticed that work has continued at the schoolhouse this spring. Now is a good time to peek in the windows. See it now, at its worst, to appreciate the full scope of the project. You can see different eras uncovered. There are several colors of paint on the walls. The original floor will be removed this week. The soil under the floors will be removed on Saturday June 13. The bucket brigade begins at 10 am. You are invited to join us.
The shingles have been removed from the addition, or cloakroom. Sheathing has been purchased and will be installed for us. Elver Robbins has been searching for shingles and pricing them. We will re-roof the addition on June 20th. Please call Genia at 303-663-8792, or Patty at 303-688-8357 for times.
Our contractor has been doing a great job of holding costs down. Rock will be purchased this week, and we hope the excavation behind the building will begin very soon.
Genia has been holding the work schedules together these last weeks. Meetings are still held on Tuesday mornings at the schoolhouse or at the Pine Nook Mountain Market. Our contractor tells me that he is impressed with the interest shown by community members. They are asking good questions and offering good suggestions. Thank you to those that are stepping forward to see this project through. You have all waited a long time to see this happen.
There will be no melodrama this year. Though the cast was willing, there was no leadership. I am solely to blame. Perhaps later this year, we will try to form a melodrama committee.
One thing is certain, the cast and crew of the melodrama gave their hearts to the effort. We have them to thank for the work that goes on at the schoolhouse now.
There will be a picnic on the Fourth of July, but at this time, we don’t know if we will celebrate the 125 year anniversary then.
I’ll mention the Sprucewood yard sale, which will be held on the 20th of June. Plan to take unsold stuff home.

Building Restoration & Melodrama Update
In 2008, IPSHA raised over $4,000 for the restoration of the Indian Park Schoolhouse, with the majority of the funds coming from the melodrama production. We have raised enough to complete the current phase of restoration work!
RESTORATION.
Tuesday mornings are the set meeting dates for our restoration group. The Pine Nook Mountain Market (1668 N Highway 67, Sedalia, CO 80135) is gracious enough to host the Tuesday Morning Meetings with the architect and our contractor. They occur at 9:00 am.
Restoration update:
- Permits are being filed.
- The carpet is removed.
- The newer floor is completely removed and assessment is being made of the condition of the original floors.
- The archeologist is being contacted.
- Thye large hole in front of the building shows years of soil erosion and is interesting to see.
- Randall, our contractor, invites your visits and questions. Weather permitting, you will see his truck at the schoolhouse. Stop by! If the weather turns, we will build snowmen and eat cake.
- Sheetrock has been removed and years of multicolored paintjobs are revealed.
- By the way, when we removed the slate chalkboards, we found the date: March6, 1933. Presumably, this was the new floors were installed and the chalkboards were hung.
- Please do not venture into the building as it is unsafe at this time.
- You may look through the back windows to see progress. Note the multicolored walls. Ignore the animal nests.
To sign up as a restoration volunteer, please call Genia at 303 663-8792.
MELODRAMA.
Saturdays are meeting days for the cast and crew of this year’s melodrama. Everyone is welcome to participate. To make for easier practice schedules for our younger melodrama volunteers, kids will mostly be featured in the olio this year. This year’s play is titled “The Belle of Bisbee.”
Please call Patty at 303-688-8357 to get involved, or to check out a script.
Last year, we developed a flexible system last year that helped folks juggle their summer schedules. You don’t have to commit to every performance; we will find a character alternate for you. We also need help with a stage crew, costumes, props etc. Ella is in charge of the Olio, which is a blessing. An olio is a collection of talents. If you whistle, teach dogs special tricks, hum while standing on your head, sing, dance or do tai chi- we welcome your talent. Share your skills with the community, have fun, and help generate funds for our restoration.
Greg Temple completed the DVD of last summer’s performance of “Bulldog Saves the Day.” Copies are available to cast members at no charge. The rest of you can obtain a copy at “Gifts From the heart” in Sedalia. ( 5040 N Plum Ave., in the old post office) There are also t-shirts, tote bags, baseball caps, and the scant remainders of the first melodrama….”The Ballad of Gopher Gap.” Unless we let you know otherwise, all proceeds go towards restoring the schoolhouse.
